UAP-TASK-FORCE · DECLASSIFIED
UAP Task Force
CONFIRMED · OFFICIAL
Department of Defense task force established August 2020 to detect, analyze, and catalog UAP incidents that could potentially threaten US national security or demonstrate advanced technology. Produced the June 2021 preliminary assessment released to Congress.
The UAP Task Force was established by Deputy Secretary of Defense David Norquist in August 2020, following increasing pressure from Congress and a series of Navy pilot encounters that had been formally acknowledged by the Pentagon. The task force operated under the Office of Naval Intelligence.
In June 2021, the UAPTF produced an unclassified preliminary assessment reporting 144 UAP incidents between 2004 and 2021. The report could not explain 143 of the 144 incidents. It noted that some objects demonstrated advanced technology, including the ability to remain stationary in high winds, move against wind, maneuver abruptly, and accelerate rapidly without observable propulsion or control surfaces.
The task force was succeeded by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in 2022, which was given a broader mandate and resources.
